ROCKEFELLER HONORED FOR HIS SUPPORT OF SCIENCE

- WVU President Hardesty Presents Rockefeller with Award in Washington -

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) was honored today by the Science Coalition for his work on science and technology in the Senate. Rockefeller was presented the Langer Chip Award by West Virginia University President David Hardesty.

“I am very honored to received this award from such an important and well-respected organization,” said Rockefeller. “Because federal support for research is so important to the future of our state and nation — and a cause that I have fought so hard over the years — this award truly has special meaning to me.

Rockefeller was selected for this award because of his dedication to supporting scientific research over the past year. A leader in the Senate on science policy, Rockefeller has continually advocated increased investment in federal research and development (R&D). He has sought to make sure that federal policy encourages the transfer of technology between government institutions and the private sector. Rockefeller is sponsoring the Federal Research Investment Act (S.296), legislation that sets a long-term vision for federal research and development funding. It identifies priorities when making funding decisions and creates a system for making sure that the funds are well-spent.

Rockefeller continued, “Federal support of scientific research is critical to pushing forward the frontiers of our scientific knowledge through basic research, future medical discoveries, and the development of new technologies. Such progress also spurs economic growth, creating jobs in West Virginia and throughout the country. Support of scientific research is our best way to ensure that West Virginia and the United States can continue to be the world leader in innovation.”

The Langer Chip Award is awarded to public policy leaders who are deemed champions of science. The Langer Chip is an object implanted inside the human body to regulate medicine distribution. The award is named after the chip because the chip is seen as a perfect example of the interconnectedness of science. It combines biomedical research, materials engineering, electrical engineering, and technology research.

The Science Coalition is an alliance of 416 organizations, institutions and individuals that include Nobel Laureates, businesses, nonprofit health organizations, medical groups, health care providers, scientific societies and public and private universities. The coalition's mission is to sustain the federal government's historic commitment to university-based science research.

Senator Bill Frist (R-TN), Congressman James Sensenbrenner (R-WI) and the late Congressman George Brown (D-CA) were also honored today.
