ROCKEFELLER URGES QUICK APPROVAL OF STATE DISASTER REQUEST

WASHINGTON, D.C. —U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) today urged the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to approve West Virginia's request that 24 counties be made eligible for federal disaster assistance. Rockefeller delivered a letter to FEMA's Region III Director Rita Calvin, and released the following statement:

"The recent flooding has created a very difficult situation for many West Virginians. In order to protect the health and livelihoods of these people, FEMA needs to act quickly to declare parts of West Virginia a disaster area. Through this declaration, assistance will be made available that can help West Virginians quickly recover from the flooding and get on with their lives."

In his letter to Calvin, Rockefeller said, "Friday's heavy rains claimed the lives of three West Virginians and caused extensive damage to a number of homes and businesses. One of the foremost concerns that the flood victims have is knowing that they may be eligible for grants or loan assistance."

A disaster declaration has been requested for the following counties: Lewis, Doddridge, Mason, Cabell, Calhoun, Harrison, Jackson, Kanawha, Monongalia, Preston, Roane, Tucker, Tyler, Barbour, Braxton, Gilmer, Marion, Putnam, Ritchie, Taylor, Upshur, Webster, Wetzel and Wirt.
