February 28, 2000 PRESIDENT APPROVES DISASTER ASSISTANCE FOR WEST VIRGINIAWASHINGTON, D.C. —U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) today applauded President Clinton and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for quickly approving disaster assistance for flood damaged counties in West Virginia. Federal funding will now be available in 20 counties, including Barbour, Braxton, Cabell, Calhoun, Doddridge, Gilmer, Harrison, Jackson, Kanawha, Lewis, Marion, Mason, Monongalia, Putnam, Ritchie, Roane, Tyler, Upshur, Wetzel, and Wirt. Rockefeller issued the following statement: "I appreciate the Administration's quick response to the recent flooding in West Virginia. FEMA Director James Lee Witt and his staff wasted no time in assessing the damage and the President responded to the state's request for assistance as fast as can be expected. "The lives of three West Virginians were claimed in the flooding and extensive damage was done to a number of homes and businesses. The flooding has created an unfortunate and difficult situation for many of our families and communities. The federal assistance that will be made available will not resolve all of the problems caused by the flood, but it will provide an important helping hand for our state. West Virginia individuals and families will now have access to low-cost loans, grants, disaster housing and other programs that can assist in the recovery effort." Starting Tuesday, West Virginia individuals and businesses can begin applying for assistance by calling 1-800-462-9029 between 8:00 am and 6:00 pm seven days a week.
