STATEMENT BY SENATOR JAY ROCKEFELLER ON THE DECISION BY SENATOR JAMES JEFFORDS TO LEAVE THE REPUBLICAN PARTY
Senator James Jeffords is a man of honor and integrity and I respect his decision.
For over a decade, Senator Jeffords and I have worked together to improve education and to expand health care coverage to all Americans, especially uninsured children.
I consider him a good friend, and I am confident that he has made this decision based on what he believes is in the best interest of Vermonters.
Despite the fact that Senator Jeffords’ decision will obviously alter the make up of the Senate, my priorities for West Virginia and the country will remain the same.
I will continue to fight for expanded, quality health care benefits for our nation’s veterans.
I will continue to fight for health insurance for all children and for a prescription drug benefit for our seniors.
And, I will continue to fight to create new jobs and economic opportunities while strengthening our existing industries.
