May 11, 2001 ROCKEFELLER SAYS:"DON'T BE FOOLED BY BUSH'S TAX CUT PROMISES"Real Relief at the Gas Pump will only come from Action by the Administration WASHINGTON, D.C. – In response to an unplanned press conference by President Bush, Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) today expressed his outrage at the President’s remarks that Americans will get relief at the gas pump once Congress passes his tax cut. Rockefeller dismissed the President’s comments, noting that in reality the President’s tax plan would provide no immediate tax relief and would greatly sacrifice funding for roads, schools, and infrastructure that West Virginia desperately needs. "President Bush will not fool West Virginians into believing that his tax cut plan will help the thousands of people who are struggling to pay for the rising cost of gasoline," Rockefeller said. "Clearly, the President and his Administration have absolutely no plan to address this crisis." "We cannot rely on empty tax-cut promises. This country is facing a serious energy situation that requires the Administration’s urgent attention. I want to know what action this Administration plans to take now to protect consumers of gasoline," Rockefeller continued. Just yesterday, Rockefeller sent letters to Vice President Cheney, who is leading the Administration’s task force on energy, and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) Chairman Robert Pitofsky, asking that they take the necessary and immediate steps to ease the burden on West Virginians who are suffering from skyrocketing gasoline prices.
