May 10, 2001 ROCKEFELLER OPPOSES NOMINATION OF STEEL INDUSTRY FOE ANNE KRUEGER TO COUNCIL OF ECONOMIC ADVISORSWASHINGTON, D.C.- U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) announced today that he has urged President Bush to withdraw the nomination of Professor Anne Krueger to the Council of Economic Advisers. Rockefeller stated that Professor Krueger has shown that she is biased against both the domestic steel industry and the United States’ trade remedy laws. "I am deeply troubled that the Administration would continue a pattern of nominating individuals who openly question the value of our trade laws at a time when the domestic steel industry is facing the greatest crisis in its history," Rockefeller wrote. "Professor Krueger’s remarks and affiliations demonstrate a complete inability to be fair, impartial, and open-minded regarding the plight of the domestic steel industry." The Council of Economic Advisors, for which Krueger has been nominated, is expected to weigh in heavily on the final decision by the Bush Administration of whether or not to initiate a Section 201 investigation. Senator Rockefeller, in numerous letters and conversations, has been asking the Administration to initiate a 201 investigation immediately in an effort to preserve the United States steel industry. Rockefeller has worked tirelessly to help stop illegal dumping of foreign steel that has crippled our domestic steel industry.
