April 9, 2001 ROCKEFELLER ANNOUNCES NEW REGIONAL JET SERVICE TO LEWISBURGThe new jet service will offer travelers convenient access to the Greenbrier ResortWASHINGTON, D.C. – Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) announced today that beginning July 1, 2001, Delta Connection carrier Atlantic Southeast Airlines (ASA) will provide non-stop, daily regional jet service between Atlanta and Lewisburg. The new service will operate on a seasonal basis from July through October. "Giving visitors a more direct way to vacation at resorts like Greenbrier, can only help West Virginia’s tourism market, and Delta carrier Atlantic Southeast Airlines is helping us provide that," said Rockefeller. "Once this service is up and running, it will help even more travelers see what a superb vacation spot our state really is." Rockefeller added, "I believe that any and all air service that we get in West Virginia can only help our economy. It has the potential to not only to boost the tourism market, but also to help foster economic development opportunities." "For years I have been working with Delta CEO Leo Mullin to bring more air service into West Virginia, and Delta has certainly stepped up to the plate. They have seen the potential we all know West Virginia has, and they have acted upon it. With this new addition, Delta will provide air service to four areas: Charleston, Huntington, Clarksburg and Lewisburg," Rockefeller continued. Senator Rockefeller began working with Delta CEO Leo Mullin several years ago to encourage more service into West Virginia. Through numerous meetings with Delta officials, and with the help of many dedicated local officials, Senator Rockefeller was able to help Delta realize the potential market in West Virginia, prompting them to initiate service to Clarksburg and Lewisburg, and convincing them to reinstate their service into Huntington. In addition, Delta provides service into Charleston. The flight will be a daily round trip departing Atlanta at 12:00 p.m. and arriving in Lewisburg at 1:35 p.m. It will then return to Atlanta, departing from Lewisburg at 2:20 p.m. and arriving back in Atlanta at 3:55 p.m. The new daily schedule between Atlanta and Lewisburg will provide connections to 171 destinations.
