AWARDS CEREMONYWASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) joined two cadets today from West Virginia at a ceremony for the National Guard "Youth Challenge" program. The West Virginia Guard Detachment was presented with an award for "Leadership – Residential Component." Cadets Jeffrey Christopher and Thomas Buffington accepted the LTG Herbert R. Temple Leadership Award on behalf of the West Virginia Detachment. The members for the detachment rotated in and out of leadership positions, demonstrating their individual moral and ethical standards, qualities that made them shine. "I commend Cadet Christopher and Cadet Buffington, and the Director of the West Virginia program, Mr. Hugh Dobson, and the entire West Virginia Detachment for their accomplishments, their commitment to themselves and their nation. West Virginia is proud," Rockefeller said. The program contains a "Residential Phase" (in-barracks) and Post-Residential Phase (mentoring). In the Residential Phase, the cadets live in barracks for 22 weeks and experience military style training for the duration. Over four-fifths of the Youth Program participants receive their GED (General Education Development). The National Guard Youth Challenge Program is conducted at 27 sites across the country, in 24 states. In West Virginia, 200 youths and a staff of 50 participated out of Camp Dawson in Kingwood.
