March 13, 2001 SENATOR ROCKEFELLER HONORED FOR HIS CONTRIBUTION TO IMPROVING HEALTH CAREWASHINGTON, DC – This evening, Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) received the distinguished Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter Award for Humanitarian Contributions to the Health of Humankind. Senator Rockefeller was chosen to receive this honor for his efforts to make health care more accessible and affordable to people of all ages. "I am honored to be receiving this distinguished award," Rockefeller said. "Improving health care has been a lifelong passion of mine. All people, regardless of age or income, should have access to affordable health care. Until that goal has been accomplished for West Virginians, and all Americans, my work will not be done." Senator Rockefeller is nationally recognized for his fight to make health care accessible and affordable to Americans of all ages, particularly seniors, children, and veterans. For more than two decades, Rockefeller has been the Senate’s strongest advocate for comprehensive health care reform. He has built a reputation for effectiveness and persistence in championing legislation to achieve these goals and continues to be a strong supporter of medical research and other efforts to advance our knowledge of effective care and treatments. Dr. Robert M. D’Alessandri, Dean of West Virginia University’s School of Medicine added, "Jay Rockefeller has been front and center in every healthcare policy debate in the United States in the past two decades, and remains one of the most passionate and well-informed national leaders on these issues." The criteria for selection to receive this award includes: legislative or administrative contributions; humanitarian service; and/or public education activities. Rockefeller was nominated for the award by the senior Senator from West Virginia, Robert C. Byrd. The award is named after its first recipients, former President Jimmy Carter and former First Lady Rosalyn Carter. The Carter awards are presented by the National Foundation for Infectious Diseases. Past award recipients include: President and Mrs. Carter, General Colin Powell, Dr. David Satcher, and Ted Turner.
