March 1, 2001 ROCKEFELLER APPOINTED TO SERVE AS UNITED STATES TRADE ADVISORWashington, D.C. – Today, the Senate Committee on Finance named Senator Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) to be an official United States Trade Advisor. The statutory position, created by the Trade Act of 1974, will make Rockefeller one of ten members of Congress (five Senators and five Representatives) who, by law, must be briefed by the United States Trade Representative on any actions pertaining to proposed changes in United States trade policy. "As a U.S. Trade Advisor, I will receive comprehensive briefings on the Administration’s negotiations with our trading partners. This will enable me to immediately address any concerns related to West Virginia’s interests," said Rockefeller. "I fully intend to use this appointment as another way of maintaining constant pressure on the Administration to take action against illegal steel imports." In his role as U.S. Trade Advisor, Rockefeller will be informed by the United States Trade Representative of any actions that may affect the trade policy of the United States. These matters include the details of possible agreements, negotiating objectives, the status of negotiations in process, and any actions which could require changes in our existing trade laws. The U.S. Trade Advisor position is filled by the Chairman and two most senior members of both parties on the Senate Committee on Finance and the House Ways and Means Committee.
