Supporting out Wounded Soldiers (PTSD and TBI)
A Pentagon Task Force has estimated that 40% of U.S. troops returning from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan are suffering from "daunting and growing" psychological problems.
Senator Rockefeller believes we must make this one of our top priorities, and that includes making sure the VA has the resources it needs to meet the growing mental health problems facing our veterans.
Thankfully, the Dignified Treatment of Wounded Warriors Act of 2007, legislation strongly supported by Senator Rockefeller, goes a long way toward meeting that goal.
To start with, the legislation requires the DoD and VA to improve the delivery of services to veterans with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) by developing a comprehensive plan for prevention, diagnosis and treatment of these service connected disabilities. Also, two national centers of excellence (one for TBI; one for PTSD) will be established to further scientific and medical research.
As he has said many times, this nation's support for our war-fighters cannot end on the battlefield. Our nation's commitment to our veterans should be just as strong as if they were still serving today. |
